I found the English to be very friendly and appreciative of our being there. The small town neighborhood pub could be a little challenge unless you were invited there by one of the neighbors. I always felt sorry for the locals because we soldiers had so much more than they did.
I am not aware of any bases at Ipswich. However, the 353 and 3f6 Fighter Groups were close.
I have no idea how far west the Germans bombed but at the 303rdBG, Molesworth, England(about 80 miles north and a little west of London), we would hear the V! Rockets overhead from time to time at night.

I was not in the 303rd, I wasn't born until 1951, but my dad was on a B-24
bomber. I have been a member of the forum for about 5 years. I have asked a
lot of questions, so I am going to ask some more to keep the forum going.
I have the movie "12':00 clock high and is one of my favorite movies. How
close does the movie come to the real experiences you gentlemen experienced?
Also, how did the English treat you when and if you went to London? I use
to work with a lady that was from Ipswich. she can remember the war
somewhat. Did we have any air bases at Ipswich and how far west did the Germans
bomb in England. How far was the closest fighter base from you? Sorry for all
the questions, but I have wonder about this for a long time and I want to
keep the forum going!
