I have flown on 7 B-17s even though I am not a veteran and have been in 12 static B-17s - all were F or G models and none had a door leading to the nose of the a/c from the cockpit. I'm sure some bright mechanic, Base Air Depot or Strategic Air Depot could have installed one had there been a need as the opening was not that large and it could have made it more convenient for the flight engineer to stand on during takeoff. Maybe.....
I am very curious about the comment made by Hal about being a PFF ship and based at Chelveston. Why were you stationed there? I have only known one PFF pilot, John Howland from the 91st, and he said he was based at Alconbury and would fly to Bassingbourn very early in the moring before a mission to attend breifing and to get his ship bombed up. I know I still have his story somewhere if anyone would like to read it.
Hal: What was the SOP for you? I know many will want to know. Thanks!
