Robert Hand Sr. - JOHNSON CITY

Capt. Robert Hand Sr., U.S.A.F (Ret.), age 84, of Johnson City, TN, 
went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 5, 2008, at home.

He was born on April 16, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., orphaned at age 7 
and raised in an all boy orphanage.

At an early age he developed an avid interest in aviation. When World 
War II broke out he enlisted in the Air Force and after training as a 
Bombardier, was sent to Molesworth, England, Air Force Base, from 
which he flew 35 combat missions in a B-17 over Germany. He remained 
in the service in the Reserves for 9 years.

After his military service he began his life-long career in Art, 
working for an Illustrator and a Lettering Man after training at 
Pratt Art Institute in New York.

>From there he went to a 21 year career with an advertising agency in 
Hartford, CT. Following that he spent 15 years with the Heublein 
Corporation as a Creative Merchandising Manager.

He moved to Florida to manage a branch that later closed. He opened 
his own firm, Bob Hand Design, and operated that along with his wife, 
Nyela, until his retirement when he moved to Johnson City to be 
closer to some of their children.

While living in Florida, his book, "LAST RAID," which details his 
World War II military experiences, and contains his original 
photography and Artwork, was compiled and published.

After retirement and the move to Johnson City, TN, he concentrated on 
Fine Art, painting in oils and acrylics and holding the titles of 
President and Past President at Watauga Valley Art League for many 
years.

He was a member of First Christian Church, Johnson City, and the Win-
A-Couple Class and enjoyed many years of worship and fellowship with 
them.

In addition to his parents, Henrietta and Albert Hand, he was 
preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Hand, and his sisters, Betsy 
Allen and Irene Pastore. He was also preceded in death by his first 
wife, Sydney Slovick, and 2nd wife, Jeanne Clarke.

He was the beloved husband and soul mate of his wife, Nyela Hand, who 
survives him; and the loving father of 3 sons and 3 daughters: Sue 
Hand, Chris Parliman and husband, Brad, Robert Hand and wife, Sandy, 
Peter Hand and wife, Roben, David Hand and Katharine Pacic and 
husband, Coty.

He was the step-father to Dr. Chele Dugger and husband, Henry Harris, 
Tembra Aldridge and husband, Jeff, and Darin Chaplain and wife, 
Teresa.

He is survived by six Grandchildren: Jeff Hand, Becca Hand, Lindsay 
Hand, Wesley Hand, Cameron Hand and Alexis Pacic.

He is also survived by six Step-Grandchildren: Nyela Edwards and 
husband, Brad, Nikole Dugger and fiancé, Austin Schofield, Megan 
Aldridge, Natalie Aldridge, Johnathon Chaplain and Jessica Chaplain.

In addition he also leaves several step-grandchildren and great-
grandchildren: Laura Punt, Brad Parliman III, Binky Parliman, Brad 
Parliman IV, Zackary, John and Sara Punt and Peyton Edwards; as well 
as many nieces, nephews and friends, including special friends, 
Roland Mashburn and Mignon Holben.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at First 
Christian Church, Johnson City, TN, on Monday, September 8, at 7:00 
PM. Visitation will precede the service and will be held from 5:00 to 
7:00 PM.

Officiating will be Sr. Minister Dr. Tim Wallingford and assisting 
him will be Steve Hill. Music will be provided by Mike Imboden and 
Teresa Chaplain. A Military Burial service will be held at Mountain 
Home on the next morning at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to First 
Christian Church Building Fund, The Parkinson´s Association or 
Watauga Valley Art League.
