Brian, I am just guessing, but he may have been sent to the 303rd ground  
crew because of a medical condition that stopped him from flying, but was not  
serious enough to keep him out of  the Army Air Force. The AAF may not  have 
wanted to lose him because he was a good airman. The 303rd may have  had an 
opening at the time, so he was transfered there. I am just guessing  though. A 
303rd veteran might know of other  reasons.
