MY NAME IS HAL SUSSKIND-and I'll try to tell you what was in the field order. I served as duty navigator on occasions and before I sw the field order I got a phone call from ops giving me the time the good guys were due at the friendly coast on the way out. Lets say he said 10;00AM. Immediately I gave him my answer" wakeup at 0400, breakfast at 5:00; Briefing at 06;00; start engines at 7:30 Take off 08;30:(the last 2 were flexible). We couldn't have 1000 B-17s ariving at the coast at the same time. We got our field order from Wing HQ with orders, with times and our order in the wing set up, We did a couple of dog legs over England so we could get our proper place in the wing formation which in turn had to get its position in the division, etc. Time was most important because the fighter groups had to pick up the bomber stream at a certain time and landmak enroute. Hope I made sense. Hal Susskind the second best navigator in the 8th Air Force, Taoilwheel was the best. The best position in this set up was lead aircraft.
