VE Day, 1945--
I had completed my tour of 35 on April 25, 1945 and was at Stone England
being processed to come home when Germany surrendered-I had drawn KP duty that
day and with two other enlisted men we were sent to the railhead in town to
pick up some supplies; and were sent with a driver and truck. Upon arrival we
learned of the surrender-we pooled our money, picked up the supplies; and
bought all the beer we could fing and hauled it all back to the base-hooked up
the PA system at the mess hall and advertised free beer as long as it would
last-we had a party and the mess Sgt and mess Officer threatened us with KP for
the rest of our lives-fortunately our orders had been cut and we left by rail
for Glasgow, Scotland early the next AM-were there two days and boarded the
Ile De France for a trip back to NY. We were the first large troopship to
land at NY after VE Day. I was 19 years old and had flown my tour as a ball
tirret gunner on Neil cunningham's crew. Am now in my 83rd year still
kicking, but not very high!!
I agree we had better talk while we still can!
