IFF is and electronic signal sent from the aircraft to a ground controler to idenify acft as Friend or Foe.

The mention of flimsy above reminded me that I have several flimsys, for 
example:

At the top left, it mentions "colors and letters of the day".  I was never 
quite sure if this refered to lights, as mentioned here, or to flares.  I 
assume that the "letters" are sent via radio? Or perhaps code via flashing 
lights?
