[303rd-Talk] B-17 IFF Switch

Gary,

I think that panel is for controlling the aircraft recognition lights, for visual ID only. I can't imagine there would have been emergency destruct procedures for this switch panel; maybe the code book or flimsy that had the actual light sequence, but not the panel.

Now, a true IFF transponder, one that broadcasts a radio signal to friendly radar operators would certainly have been highly protected technology and would have had emergency destruct procedures. I don't know if 8th AF planes carried true IFF (or if it even existed during the period).

Best regards,

Keith

This link shows the IFF unit used in B-17s. It was said to be
mounted in the radio room with a destruct button beside it. Is that
correct? Can anyone explain its operation -- how the colored light
switches and keying switch were used?
