Gentlemen,
I'm still researching the events of that day and have a question about the fighter escort. In William Crawford's "Wiesbaden!", he states:
"The P-51s that were scheduled to escort the First Bomb Division B-17s are nowhere close when the 303rd calls for assistance and a group of P-38s who are supporting the Second Bomb Division B-24s answer the call..."
Mr. Crawford does not provide a reference for this statement and the only Eighth AF fighter group still flying P-38s at this time was the 479th, which was operating about 200 miles north that day.
Does anybody have information on what escort group actually responded when the 303rd was attacked on 15 August, 1944?
Thanks ahead,
Keith
