Sounds like a British Ordnance Survey map with a six figure map reference.
Might be available on the internet.
Rex.

On the subject of faulty navigation I remember reading
a crash report of a B17 that took off from Molesworth
on an operation in conditions of mist, and flew on
a reciprocal bearing west instead of east. From memory
this plane crashed in Wales after about an hour's flight.

Here is a drawing of POW 2Lt Charles L. Gould done by another POW at
Stalag Luft 1. I left it full sized:
http://www.303rdbg.com/303rd-talk/pow-gould.jpg
or just the key part cropped:
http://www.303rdbg.com/303rd-talk/pow-gould2.jpg
We are trying to determine the artist. By Gould's collar, there is a
signature. Rather than say what others have guessed, I'll see if any
of you have any ideas what the name is. It could be a nickname, I
suppose.
We'd appreciate any guesses. Maybe the drawing can be enhanced to
clairfy it. I tried without much success.
Thanks,
Gary

It looks to me like Eich, and when I searched that, I found...
EICH HENRY J JR 2/LT 0797978 359TH PILOT 10-27-43
01-11-44 EICH'S CREW POW
Eich was in Stalag Luft I, according to the POW records, so that adds up.
What does everyone else think?

It could be EICH. It may or may not be a 303rd man. The family
thought it read HIGH. To me it looks more like FIGE or LIGE or TIGE,
but I sure don't know. I can't find a matching name in the POW
database for that camp. I want it to be EICH, but I think it looks
more like a G than a C.
Here it is again enhanced and distorted a little:

Well, it's not Eich. I just talked with him on the phone. He's in
Florida and sounds great, but he was not an artist. As a side note,
my dad wrote that he knew Eich and some others who were shot down on
11 Jan 1944 (mission 98) to Oschersleben. Eich does not remember my
father now. POWs had a totally different war experience. It is very
interesting to talk with them. I think the first 303rd POW I spoke
with was my dear friend Bill Dallas, who is one of us here.

My uncle Raymond Gilstrap was on that plane that was shot down. He lost
his arm and was a pow. I would like to see the picture you are talking
about.

Diana,
The picture at
http://www.303rdbg.com/303rd-talk/pow-gould.jpg
is of Charles Gould drawn by a fellow POW at Stalag Luft 1. Eich's
only connection is that they were in the same POW camp. Looks like
Gilstrap was in Stalag 4. The officers and enlisted men were
generally kept in different POW camps.
If you haven't ever spoken to Henry Eich, you should give him a call.
He was very excited that I had called. I'm sure he can tell you
things about your uncle. It always makes me nervious to call a 303rd
veteran that I have never met, but each time I have done it has been
a great experience.
