Northrop Black Widow
USAAF designation: P61 and F15
US Navy designation: FT-1
The Black Widow was built to an Army specification issued in 1940.
Development began in 1940, an order for two XP-61's was placed in January
1941, and the first prototype flew on May 26th, 1942.
P-61A and P61-B. Generally similar, the earlier P61A being fitted with two
Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10
(B Series) and the later P61A and P61B with the R-2800-65 ( C Series)
engines, all with two-stage
superchargers.
P61-C. Two Pratt & Whitney R_2800-57 engines with single-stage superchargers
and new Curtis Electric airscrews with paddle-type blades. Aircraft fitted
with slatted air-brakes on upper and lower surfaces of outer wings.
F15. A photographic reconnaissance version of the P61-A
Dimensions: Span 66 feet. Length 48feet 11 inches
Height 14 feet 2 inches Wing area 664 sq. feet
Weight loaded 27000 lbs.
Performance Max. speed 375 mph at 17000 feet.
Climb to 25000 feet 13 minutes
Service ceiling 33000 feet.
