???? My opinion only here and I am very opinionated. In our planes we had an instrument called a P.D.I. Pilot Direction Indicator.
???? During our crew training? training the bombardiers we droped 100 pound bombs full of sand on targets to train the bombardiers with their bombsight. When they adjusted the drift on their bomsight it adjusted the pointer on the PDI so the pilot could turn the airplane accordingly to kill the drift. The pilots skill in turning just the right amount and and how rapidly he made the adjustment determinded to a great extend wheither the bomb hit the target or not.?SO If the bombardier had a sharp pilot he probably got a better score than one with a below average pilot.
???? On missions the lead plane flew the bomb run on the C1 auto.pilot. When the bombardier adjusted the drift the bomsidght sent a signal to the auro pilot to make the necessary correction in the course. The bombsight was flying the plane through the auto pilot and the PDI was not used.

???? Other than the Lead and deputy lead none of the other?planes even had a bombsight aboard.
Hense, chosing a lead or deputy lead bombardier was a bit like shooting black crows on a dark night.?
I suspect the pilot had as much or more to do with a good practice bomb score than did the bombardier.? It's kinda like chosing a lifetime mate and getting married, isn't it.
