  Wouldn't there have been some sort of fence or guarded perimeter around 
the base?
 I can't imagine a  horse pasture for a border.  Maybe the horse is a spy

The only deterrent that I can remember was the guard post on the road out of 
the base
that went past the hospital & mess hall. ------ After looking at the map I 
think it must
have went past sites #2 & #5. I seem to remember a church ---must have
been Brington. Don't remember any other buildings between the base & the 
"hi-wa".
that led toThrapston. on the way to Northampton. [seven miles?????]
