Subject: RE: [303rd-Talk] Christmas in England
Maurice,
You mention that you were in England for quite some time. Did any of
the non-combat servicemen ever get to return to the States on leave? Or
were you there for the duration regardless?
Wishing you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!!
Dave

I can think of only three from the 328th-444th .... one was presumably a
section 8. The other 2 were from A/C Supply. M/Sgt Jacob "Jake" Ruefer &
S/sgt Wayne Baker. Jake was presumably sent "home" - he had 27 1/2 years
in service when he went overseas. he traveled the island scrouinging
supplies for our supply warehouse. I believe he left early '43. M/sgt Tommy
Fennel took his place as "boss". Baker was at the front desk by the "customer'
window. If I read the personnel chart right he was sent "home" 1/1/"43
The personel roster for both of these men is incomplete. I furnished the name
for it as they had no record of them except Bakers wlhich had the date in the
"date of fate" column. I know that neither one of them died. I have a record of
most of the supply men but have lost these two completely.
Jake was a large man with type "B" blood --He said that stood for Budwieser.
If you knew him you would have believed him!!!
There was one of the men that worked with Fred Gruenberg in the fuel
section that was killed when his truck rammed the tail of a 17 in the fog.
I believe that they were like myself "duration plus". I never had a leave
in the states. Had passes every fortnight a 3 day , two 4 day & one 7 day.
I THINK!!!!!--------------------Maurice
