Maurice,
Thinking keeps the brain active, a good thing for us oldies.
Very many RAF trainee pilots were sent overseas for
their flying training to places that had better good weather
records than we do. I could not say whether they were paid extra subsistence
allowance, but would not think so.
Sadly, G.I's were seen by many shopkeepers as easy
marks to defraud out of some of their cash. That is human
nature at its worst.
Americans did find our currency confusing. They were used to a decimal
system, whereas we had 240d (pence)
to £1. d represents the Latin word denarius ( penny).
Rex.

REX----You seem to have the power to start me to thinkingg----
THAT is dangerous. The sentence above reminds me of the
comb I bought in a store [where is not in my "memory bank"!]
I had paid for it & stepped aside when a man next to me bought
a comb like mine---[Price???] I do remember it was about half
what I paid. That is the only time I knew I had been had!!
W [the G.Is] more or less ask for it--hand out a pound & say
"Take it out of this." I usually had a pocket full of change when
I got back on the base during the early days of my visit in England.
I seem to remember that some RAF pilots were trained over here.
[?????]---Often wondered how they were treated money-wise.
Maurice
