Maurice,
Excellently put.
Our Prime Mimister in November 1967 put another
devaluation in force, one of 14%, taking the value down from $2.80 to $2.40.
With typical politician double-speak he said the following:
It does not mean, of course, that the pound here in Britain
in your pocket or purseor in your bank has been devalued.
He did not add: Wait till you try to buy something with it.
Rex.

Subject: [303rd-Talk] coinage--FYI
TO ALL----
In my memory the pound was either $4.03 or $4.04 & the Egyptian
pound was $4.05. Since I don't trust my memory to much I checked
the web. I typed in "English pound exchange - 1945" -- Wikipedia
came up with the following--had to scroll down several pages
before I found It.
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
>Under continuing economic pressure, and despite months of denials that
>it would do so, on September 19, 1949, the government devalued the
>pound by 30%, from US$4.03 to US$2.80. The move prompted several
>other governments to devalue against the dollar too, including Australia,
>Denmark, Ireland, Egypt, India, Israel, New Zealand, Norway
>and South Africa
Do I have too much time on my hands????????????????
