Leroy,
>From my earliest memories of currency values, say about
1936, the exchange rate was more or less $4.03 to
£1 sterling. In fact a slang term for five shillings, one quarter of £1, was
a dollar, and we also spoke of
half a dollar, meaning 2/6d.(two shillings and six pence.)
This remained the same until 1947 when the pound sterling was devalued and
we started to pay for winning the war.
The American rate of pay for their armed forces was
roughly four times that of the British, meaning that an
American sergeant earned as much as an English captain.
Also higher paid were the troops of Canada and
Australia. Other countries armed forces were more on a
par with British rates, but their governments were ones in exile.
High rates of pay, and access to cigarettes, chocolate,
and nylons from the PX were of some assistance in
pursuing young ladies.
Rex.
